So, James of the bible was nicknames Old Camel Knees...how did he get that? Apparently, He prayed so often on his knees that they became calloused to the point of...well...you get the idea.
But, I've been pondering that since I heard it back in September.
How long would that take? Granted the floors were probably dirt with pieces of gravel, maybe sometimes they were wood...But, most times, dirt. I'm just in awe because that would take a stinkin long time to build up callouses.
Also, the process of forming callouses, whole other story! I went through a phase where I thought I could learn to play the guitar, but having tiny hands like mine, allows for only Taylor Swift songs and the occasional worship song avoiding any F's or bar notes. But, my fingers, oh my poor fingers, to build up the callouses was so painful. I would "play" until they hurt and even once the callouses started to build up, it still hurt unless I played every day.
So, James was on the floor every day, probably out of habit, but mostly out of necessity. I picture him first beginning to pray on his knees and he'd pray and pray until he just couldn't stay on his knees anymore. It had to have been painful starting out, yet he didn't stop. He endured. He understood the pain was worth it. Fast forward to when people starting calling him old camel knees, what a testament to him and his faith that prayer was the most important thing to him.
James wrote one of the most intense books for Christians trying to grow in maturity. The themes that run through it have to be taken seriously because the man who wrote it, lived it. Lived it to the point where it became a physical picture on his body. Knees of a man fully aware he was nothing without his savior, and because of that, desired to be in constant communication with him. Every day, hours of a day.
I want to be like James. I want to be so aware of my state as a sinner and a person who literately cannot move towards good without the help of Christ that I'm driven to my knees, every day, for multiple hours of the day.
Blessings,
Heather
